Regular Preventive Dental Appointments
It is much better to prevent a dental problem before it begins. We would much rather you come in for regular cleanings than have to schedule an extensive restoration later.
Regular checkups are imperative to maintaining healthy teeth and gums. For example, the first few stages of tooth decay, including demineralization and even moderately sized cavities, do not cause a great deal of discomfort. By the time you come in with tooth pain, the decay can be extensive and your options may be limited. We strongly encourage you to visit Dr. Foster at least twice a year to be sure your teeth remain healthy.
Regular Dental Cleanings
Plaque can build up very quickly in your mouth. Even with regular brushing and flossing you can’t remove all of it. For this reason, we recommend you receive regular professional cleanings at least once every six months (along with your dental checkups). Dr. Foster and your hygienist will use a variety of methods, including state-of-the-art ultrasonic scaling, to remove plaque and tartar from even the most hard-to-reach places on your teeth.
Laser Gum Treatment
Laser treatment is fast becoming one of the most popular methods for effectively treating and eliminating periodontal disease. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, lasers used in periodontal therapy decrease bleeding, swelling, and discomfort for the patient when used properly.
Oral Cancer Screening
According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, oral cancer is diagnosed in about 100 people each day in the U.S., and someone dies from the disease every hour of every day. However, if caught early, the survival rate increases by 80 percent. Dr. Foster uses Velscope technology during your checkups to examine oral tissue including your lips, cheeks, tongue, and upper throat to help identify early abnormalities associated with oral cancer.
To prevent cavities, we can apply sealants to cover pits and openings in the surfaces of back teeth that brushing may miss. This practice is generally performed on children, but can be done for adults as well. The resin we use to cover trouble spots will blend in seamlessly with your natural teeth and will significantly reduce the chance of tooth decay. You will still need to practice careful dental hygiene habits at home to further reduce your risk for developing cavities or gum disease.
Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that helps your teeth better absorb calcium and phosphorus, the primary elements that constitute tooth enamel. This means that fluoride can strengthen teeth and help prevent tooth decay. While the majority of Americans receive fluoride from drinking fluoridated water, both children and adults can benefit from a professional topical fluoride treatment.
TMJ refers to the two joints on either side of your face (just in front of your ears) that attach your jaw to your skull. They allow the jaw to open, close, and glide as needed. If you experience pain in your facial muscles, constant jaw clicking, jaw popping, or chronic earaches and headaches, you may have TMJ dysfunction. Dr. Foster can use a variety of methods to diagnose your TMJ and will work closely with you to find a solution that offers you relief and fits your lifestyle.
Crowded, uneven, overlapping, or misaligned teeth can lead to more serious oral health issues such as TMJ and an increased chance of developing tooth decay and gum disease. Dr. Foster has worked with straight wire braces for decades, and can provide high-quality, precision orthodontic treatment for the entire family, including children, teens, and adults.
